interactive math art during museum visit

Session 04

Dr. Michelle Manes led an artistic activity that entailed making curved drawings using straight lines.  MaTCH teachers Brian Marguleas and Jill Shimabukuro led pedagogical activities related to the use of manipulatives in the classroom.

“I realized in greater depth how art can be used in math. I especially enjoy how a certain topic can be spanned across all grade levels, emphasizing the need for vertical alignment in math.” – MaTCH participant

Resources used/introduced:

  • Michelle’s cool “Rotation through Translation” (https://www.shadertoy.com):  if you change the code, you need to press the “play” button at the bottom of the code window for changes to take effect — you can’t break the code — if you do something & it throws an error, just reload the page to start fresh.
  • Desmos online graphing calculator
  • GeoGebra
  • Wolfram Alpha
