CRDG + DEVELOPING TEACHING EXPERTISE PROJECT (DTE)

The Curriculum Research and Development Group at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education partnered with the Developing Teaching Expertise project at the University of Michigan School of Education to produce professional development modules for in-service elementary mathematics teachers for broad dissemination.

What are Developing Teaching Expertise modules?

DTE professional development modules offer PD facilitators and professional learning communities (PLCs) rich multimedia materials to use with groups of practicing teachers. They provide opportunities to learn from leading mathematics teacher educators about key topics in elementary mathematics education.

Developing Teaching Expertise @ Mathematics

Each module provides elementary teacher groups with content for ten engaging, practice focused, 90-minute sessions. Three modules are available: fractions, mathematical practices, and geometric measurement.

Integrated content includes four core areas: knowing mathematics for teaching, enhancing skill with teaching practices, understanding students ways of thinking, and learning to learn from one’s own teaching.

Learn from leading mathematics teacher educators by discussing their explanations of key ideas, seeing their modeling of practices, and learning from their responses to questions from practicing teachers. Modules integrate opportunities for participants to learn with colleagues while focusing on materials from their own teaching.

Facilitator supports aid preparation and enactment of professional development sessions. Supports include in-depth facilitator guides, a custom media player for sharing resources, and extensive collections of videos showing the enactment of activities and responses from participants.

Representing and Comparing Fractions in Elementary Mathematics Teaching provides teacher learning groups with ten 90-minute sessions centered on representation, definition, equivalence, and comparison of fractions.

Geometric Measurement and Spatial Reasoning in Elementary Mathematics Teaching provides teacher learning groups with ten 90-minute sessions that examine concepts, methods, and tools used in linear, 2D, and 3D measurement.
